FAQ

Will Dr. William Zhao’s Chinese herbal capsules help my condition?

Chinese herbs have been used successfully to treat millions of patients over thousands of years, arguably their efficacy and history are more established than many western drugs. Dr. Zhao developed his unique herbal capsules based on many years of clinical research and experience. They have been used successfully in increasing immune support, reducing insomnia, depression, fatigue, allergies, balancing hormone and blood sugar levels. Best of all, Chinese herbs do not have the sometimes unwanted side effects of western medicine. The herbal capsules contain concentrated herbal ingredients and as a result are less expensive, more pleasant tasting and easier to take compared to traditional ‘herbal soups’ or ‘teas’ used in Asia. Dr. Zhao received research awards for his work on herbal medicine research and development from The Beijing Government’s Department of Health during his employment with The Beijing University. In addition to following the recommended prescribed dosage and duration, patients should also expect that lifestyle or dietary changes may also be required to achieve and maintain the benefits from taking Chinese herbal medicine.

My doctor does not believe in Traditional Chinese medicine and herbal medicine. Do I have to believe in order to obtain results?

In fact, many of Dr. Zhao’s previously sceptical patients (which include western trained physicians and medical specialists) have found his herbal products to be extremely beneficial, and have referred their friends and family to his clinics for treatment.

Which conditions can acupuncture help?

Acupuncture can be helpful in a variety of chronic or periodic painful conditions, such as lower back pain, cancer pain, neuralgia, headaches, premenstrual and peri-menopausal syndromes, and the pain resulting from arthritis and rheumatism. Insomnia, depression, fatigue, diabetes, Flu and virus infection and other various syndromes that are difficult to treat using Western medicine only, such as the various fibromyalgia syndromes, cervical spondylosis may also respond well to his acupuncture therapy. Acupuncture and his Chinese herbal medicine capsules are used as combination therapy for prevention and adjunction in the treatment of asthma, allergies, and sinus problems, as well as in the acute symptoms of viral upper respiratory infections. When treated at an early stage, cold or flu symptoms may be eliminated. Doctor’s acupuncture and Chinese Herbal medicine capsules combination therapy are also finding increasing use in various chronic viral illnesses which cause a variety of problems such as inflammation, pain, depression and fatigue. Other conditions responsive to his acupuncture include repetitive motion injuries such as those suffered by computer workers, athletes, musicians and muscular aches and pains from overwork or strained muscles. Pain that persists after surgery can also be treated. In addition, those suffering from Bell’s palsy, chronic disorders of diarrhea or constipation, and some inflammatory disorders of the digestive system can be relieved. Acupuncture is now widely recognized as a treatment for painful conditions such as the pain and swelling of acute joint sprains and bruises. If treatment can be given within 48 hours of an injury, the results are usually very positive. The World Health Organization has also listed conditions which have been proven to be effectively treated by acupuncture. Please check their website (www.who.int) for more detail.

What are the risks of acupuncture? Is it uncomfortable?

Only sterile, one-use surgical-grade stainless steel disposable needles along with surgical gloves are used so there is no risk of infection. Acupuncture needles are solid and slightly thicker than a strand of hair. They are considered medical devices such as surgical scalpels and syringes and are manufactured according to single-use standards of sterility. If any sensation is experienced during insertion, it is often compared to a mosquito bite and disappears very quickly. Needles can be quickly adjusted if the patient feels discomfort. The most common complication of treatment is a small bruise or a small drop of blood when the needle is removed. Any medical technique involves some risk. Properly performed, acupuncture presents minimal hazard when compared to drug regimens or surgical techniques. A heavy, distended, sore, or achy feeling is often felt around the area of effective acupuncture.

How does Acupuncture work?

According to western science, acupuncture points stimulate the nervous system to release certain chemicals such as endorphins in the brain, muscles and spinal cord; these chemicals in turn block pain signals or trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which affect the body’s own internal regulating system. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) on the other hand is based on the concept of Yin and Yang, whereby your body’s health is dependent on the balance of these opposing but complimentary forces. Everything can be divided into Yin and Yang: Yin is generally associated with objects or ideas that are dark, still and cold while Yang is generally associated with items or concepts that are bright, warm, and in motion. Each organ in the body has an element of Yin and Yang within it. Illness is believed to be caused by an imbalance of Yin and Yang in the body. The other important concept in TCM is ‘Qi’ energy, which circulates through our body by way of various channels called Meridians; this energy nourishes our tissues, fluids, blood and organs. We build up and store Qi in our organs through our food, mood and environment. Any blockage or obstruction to the flow of Qi, like a dam in the flow in a river, may result in backup or restriction in other parts of our body– leading to disease. Acupuncture and herbs can help the body’s internal organs to correct imbalances in digestion, absorption and energy circulation.

What are the 3 Phases of Therapy?

Patients undergoing acupuncture and herb treatment therapy typically experience the following 3 phases in their path to healing: Response Phase: This phase is when your body begins to respond to the benefits of acupuncture and herbs. Patients typically feel better and some relief from their condition but some may feel worse as their body begins to adjust to treatment. Patients on average reach this phase after 3 to 6 treatment sessions. Balance Phase: Patients may experience flare ups of their underlying ailment during this phase as their body’s immune and energy levels begin to achieve equilibrium. Patients usually reach this phase between 5 to 10 treatment sessions. Stabilization Phase: This is phase when the underlying ailment, such as chronic pain, has subsided. The patient begins to feel good as total or the greater part of their symptoms have receded. Occasional maintenance sessions, with a frequency of several months between visits, are encouraged to ensure patients continue to benefit from their initial course of treatment and also in achieving optimal health.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments necessary depends on the condition being treated. Recent injuries and conditions treated at an early stage will see immediate improvement. Those conditions that have been present for longer periods may require more treatment, and serious derangements of structure or metabolism will require extensive therapy. For many disorders, symptoms reflect underlying conditions that may have to be treated beyond the point at which symptoms have improved. If treatments are stopped too quickly after symptoms begin to respond, the condition may eventually return. A course of treatments for recent problems in a healthy adult may be 6 sessions. In an adult with many health problems or with a chronic disease, as many as 12 to 24 sessions may be required before an initial response is seen. Doctor will not recommend continuing your therapy if you do not experience any improvement after a course of treatment.

My doctor does not believe in acupuncture and Chinese herb medicine. Do I have to believe in order to obtain results?

Acupuncture and herbs have been used successfully for thousands of years in China and throughout Asia. A positive attitude towards wellness may reinforce the effects of the treatment received just as a negative attitude may hinder the effects of acupuncture or any other treatment. It is always beneficial to have confidence in your physician, but belief in a specific method is not a requirement to achieve positive results. How should I prepare for treatment sessions?

The best general advice is to come in a calm state. Try to arrive ten or fifteen minutes before your appointment to allow yourself a chance to relax. Vigorous exercise or sexual activity in the hour before treatment is not recommended. You should not have recently eaten a large meal, nor should you be fasting for more than 6 hours before your appointment. The use of alcohol, tobacco, coffee, food with colour or other drugs is also not recommended prior to or just following a treatment. Comfortable, loose clothing should be worn, and, if possible, you should not wear any metallic jewelry, watches, or earrings. Makeup and nail polish should be minimized or eliminated. Please also avoid the use of perfumes, colognes or strongly scented cosmetics.

What happens during the acupuncture treatment?

Depending on the areas to be treated, you may be positioned on your back, your stomach, your side, or sitting. Be certain that you can remain relaxed in this position, as you should not move for the duration of the treatment, which usually lasts 30 to 45 minutes. It is best to practice a slow and relaxed abdominal breathing which involves allowing your abdomen to expand as you inhale and to contract as you exhale, during treatment.

Will I need to get undressed during treatment?

Many conditions can be treated by rolling up pant legs and shirt sleeves as long as the clothes are loose fitting. There are some instances when it is necessary to remove clothing (e.g. when treating back pain) but we are respectful of patients’ privacy and will leave the room when undressing and re-dressing.

What sensations will I experience during acupuncture treatment?

Individual Results May Vary. Most patients experience a pleasant state of calm, which develops during the treatment and may persist for some time. some may even fall nearly asleep during the session. In areas that have been treated, a sensation of heaviness or swelling may persist for up to an hour or so after treatment. Some may find that the pain or discomfort of the condition may be reduced by some percentage or even  eliminated. Frequently, the relief will persist, though in some situations the pain will return after a few hours or days to its former level. In certain conditions, a worsening of pain is to be expected before improvement is seen. For some disorders, no effect is noticed immediately and the condition takes a few days or a series of treatments to respond. Be sure to tell us of the response to treatment at the next appointment so that necessary changes can be made to your treatment.

What should I do after treatment?

It is often helpful to sit quietly following a treatment, and relax. A gentle walk or very mild exercise can also be helpful. Large meals, vigorous exercise, alcohol, coffee or excessive aggravation should be avoided.
