Migraines are painful, often debilitating headaches, sometimes accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light, noise, and smell. These throbbing headaches tend to reoccur and can last from hours to days. The precise underlying cause of migraines is unknown but the principal theory is that they are caused by spasms in the arteries that supply blood to the brain. While headaches may be a warning sign of more serious medical conditions, people most often experience either a tension headache, a migraine or both.
